Bringing children and books together

• Choose a comfortable place where the child can be close to you.
• Be enthusiastic about reading stories.
• Show your child that reading is interesting and fun.
• Establish regular times for reading during the day or at bed time.
• Ask questions as you read this will help after the story is finished to see how your child liked it and did connect the story to their lives and experiences.
• Ask questions they understand what the story was about.

Children love to hear their favourite books over and over again. This helps them understand and notice new things in the stories.

Types of books for reading aloud are Alphabet books, nursery rhymes, counting (concept books) books, as well as Repetitious and pattern books and traditional literature.

Picture books tell a story with no words. This allows the child to make up its own story using imagination and creativity.
